How to Call UK 0800, 0345 and 0300 Numbers From Abroad
How to Call UK 0800, 0345 and 0300 Numbers From Abroad
UK 0800 and 0808 Freephone numbers generally won't connect from outside the UK. Where a call does get through, you pay your own carrier's international rate for it. UK 03 numbers usually do connect: dial +44, then the number without its leading 0. Check the organization's contact page first, because several publish a different number for overseas callers.
Below: what each UK prefix does, the verified from-abroad numbers for HMRC, the passport office and four UK banks, and what to do when an organization publishes nothing at all.
- 0800 and 0808 are a UK-network arrangement. Freephone means the UK organization pays for the call, and that arrangement usually stops at the international gateway.
- 03 numbers behave like ordinary landline numbers. 0300, 0303, 0344, 0345 and 0370 are priced like an 01 or 02 call inside the UK, which is why they are far more likely to accept a call from abroad.
- "+44 and drop the leading 0" works at some UK institutions and misses at others. It reaches NatWest's main line and HM Passport Office. HMRC, HSBC, Lloyds and Barclaycard each send overseas callers to a separate number of their own.
- Check the organization's own page before you dial. Every number in this article came from the organization's own website on 4 September 2026, with the source named.
Why UK 0800 and 0808 Numbers Fail From Abroad
UK 0800 and 0808 numbers are Freephone lines, which means the organization you're calling pays for the call instead of you. Under Ofcom's rules, 0800 and 0808 numbers are free for consumers to call from any UK phone, and that arrangement rests on UK carrier agreements which generally don't extend to a call placed from another country.
Two separate things can break the call:
- Many foreign carriers don't route to the UK Freephone range at all, so the call fails before it reaches the UK.
- The receiving organization's contract with its UK carrier rarely covers international termination, so even a call that arrives can be refused.
Where an 0800 call from abroad does connect, you're paying your own carrier's international rate, because the free part stayed in the UK. Ofcom's UK Calling reform made 0800 and 0808 free from UK mobiles as well as landlines in July 2015, and that's the change people mistake for "free from anywhere." Anyone dialing the other direction runs into the same problem with US 1-800 numbers.
One limit worth naming: no calling service can make a Freephone line accept international traffic. If the line rejects overseas calls, WorldDialer's calls get rejected with everyone else's.
The "+44 and Drop the Leading 0" Rule, and Where It Breaks
To dial a UK 03 number from abroad, replace the leading 0 with +44: NatWest's UK line, 0345 788 8444, becomes +44 3457 888 444. NatWest publishes exactly that number for overseas callers. Treat it as a first attempt, because the same move reaches nobody at several large UK institutions.
Two worked examples, side by side:
- Where it works. NatWest publishes +44 3457 888 444 for overseas callers, its UK 0345 788 8444 line with the leading zero swapped for +44. HM Passport Office does the same, publishing +44 (0)300 222 0000 against its UK 0300 222 0000 line.
- Where it misses. HMRC, HSBC, Lloyds and Barclaycard each publish a wholly separate number for callers outside the UK. HMRC varies it by service, so Income Tax, Self Assessment and National Insurance each have their own overseas number.
The operating rule: check the organization's "contact us" or "call us from abroad" page first. If it publishes an overseas number, dial that one. If it publishes nothing, take its 03 number, drop the leading 0 and put +44 in front.
The substitution costs nothing to try, and knowing which prefix you're dialing tells you how likely it is to work at all.
What Each UK Number Prefix Means
0800 and 0808 are Freephone numbers that usually won't connect from abroad. 0300, 0303, 0344, 0345 and 0370 are priced like ordinary landline calls inside the UK, and are usually reachable as +44 followed by the number without its leading 0.
- 0800, 0808. What it is in the UK: Freephone. The organization pays and the UK caller pays nothing. From outside the UK: Often won't connect. Where it does, your carrier's international rate applies.
- 0300, 0303. What it is in the UK: Charged like an 01/02 landline call. Ofcom allows 030 numbers only for public sector and not-for-profit bodies, including HMRC, the DVLA and HM Passport Office. From outside the UK: Usually reachable as +44 then the number without its leading 0. Check the organization's page first.
- 0344, 0345, 0370. What it is in the UK: Charged like an 01/02 landline call. Used by many UK businesses and banks. From outside the UK: Same. Usually reachable, and still check the organization's page first.
Ofcom opened the UK-wide 03 range in February 2007 as an alternative to chargeable 08 numbers, and its rules say a call to an 03 number costs no more than a national rate call to an 01 or 02 number. Ofcom also bars revenue sharing on calls to 03 numbers. The 030 sub-range narrows further, since Ofcom's National Telephone Numbering Plan allows those numbers to be assigned only to public sector bodies and not-for-profit bodies. That is why UK government services use the range heavily, and HMRC, the DVLA and HM Passport Office all publish 0300 lines. UK 03 calls count toward inclusive minutes the same way 01 and 02 calls do, but that does not change what an overseas caller pays.
One scope note: 09xx premium-rate numbers, 070 personal numbers, 118 directory enquiries and short codes such as 111, 101 and 999 are different services and sit outside this article.

Calling HMRC From Abroad: a Different Number for Every UK Service
HMRC doesn't have one overseas number. Each service publishes its own, and none of them is the domestic 0300 line with +44 substituted in. Income Tax is +44 135 535 9022, Self Assessment is +44 161 931 9070 and National Insurance is +44 191 203 7010. Look up the specific service you need, because a number borrowed from another reaches a different department. All three run Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
DVLA Publishes No Dedicated Number for Callers Outside the UK
DVLA's own gov.uk vehicle tax contact page publishes one number, 0300 123 4321, and says nothing about calling from outside the UK. It's the documented exception to the advice above. Dial the published number as +44 300 123 4321, knowing it isn't set up specifically for international callers.
One correction: an 0844-format number circulates on aggregator sites and old forum threads as DVLA's overseas line. It appears on no gov.uk page, and 0844 is a revenue-share range a government agency wouldn't use for an official line. Skip it, and for any other DVLA service check gov.uk/contact-the-dvla.
How to Dial a UK Number From Wherever You Are
To call a UK number from abroad, dial +44, then the number without its leading 0. The plus sign stands in for your country's international access code, so a UK number saved in +44 format dials correctly anywhere.
- Check the organization's "contact us" or "call us from abroad" page for a dedicated overseas number.
- If there is one, dial exactly what it publishes.
- If there isn't, take the UK number and drop its leading 0.
- Put the +44 country code in front: 0345 788 8444 becomes +44 3457 888 444.
- Skip 0800 and 0808 numbers, and look for an 01, 02 or 03 alternative on the same page.
The hours above are UK time, so work out your offset before you dial. Once a UK number is in +44 form it's a standard international call, and a browser dialer is one way to place it without a phone plan.
What It Costs to Call the UK From Abroad
A UK 03 number dialed from abroad is billed as an ordinary international call to the UK, and what you pay is set by whoever carries the call. WorldDialer's rate for calling the UK is $0.04 per minute.
Three things worth separating:
- The prefix has nothing to do with what you pay from abroad. 0300, 0345 and 0370 cost a UK landline rate inside the UK and an international rate outside it.
- The organization you're calling isn't covering the cost. Barclaycard's own from-abroad page warns that call charges may apply.
- Your own carrier sets the number that matters to you. Its international rate to the UK is the figure to hold up against four cents.
We don't have a verified figure for what your mobile carrier, roaming add-on or hotel charges for a UK call, so we're leaving that number off the page. Look up yours.
WorldDialer runs in a browser with no app to install. Calling is pay-as-you-go, credits start at $5 and never expire, and the service dials 200+ countries. An optional Premium subscription takes 20% off every call.
Before You Dial a UK Number
Check the organization's own page, dial the overseas number if it publishes one, otherwise put +44 in front of its 03 number and drop the leading 0. Skip the 0800 number.
WorldDialer dials the UK from your browser at $0.04 a minute, pay-as-you-go, with credits that start at $5 and never expire across 200+ countries. Going the other way? Here's calling the US from the UK.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I call a UK 0800 number from abroad?
Usually not. Many foreign carriers won't route to the UK Freephone range, and where a call does connect you pay your own carrier's international rate. None of the seven UK organizations checked for this article publishes an 0800 line for overseas callers, so look for an 01, 02 or 03 number on the same page.
How do I dial a UK 0345 number from outside the UK?
Dial +44, then the number without its leading 0. NatWest's UK line, 0345 788 8444, is published for overseas callers as +44 3457 888 444 (natwest.com, checked 4 September 2026). Check the organization's own contact page first, since some publish a different number.
What is HMRC's phone number if I'm calling from outside the UK?
HMRC publishes a different number for each service. Income Tax is +44 135 535 9022, Self Assessment is +44 161 931 9070 and National Insurance is +44 191 203 7010. None of these is HMRC's UK 0300 number with +44 in front. All three run Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm (gov.uk, checked 4 September 2026).
Does DVLA have a number for callers outside the UK?
DVLA doesn't publish one. Its vehicle tax contact page lists 0300 123 4321 and says nothing about calling from outside the UK, so dial it as +44 300 123 4321 (gov.uk, checked 4 September 2026). For any other DVLA service, check gov.uk/contact-the-dvla for the current number.
Is +44 the same as 0044?
They point at the same country code, 44. The 0044 form spells out an international access code, 00, in front of it, and that works from countries where 00 is the code you dial to call out. The plus sign is the portable form. Your phone swaps it for whatever access code the country you're standing in uses, so a number saved as +44 dials correctly wherever you are.
