Call US from Spain: Best Options for Expats

By WorldDialer Team
Calling the US from Spain? Spanish carriers charge EUR 0.50+/minute. Compare options from VoIP to browser-based calling at $0.02/minute. No subscription needed.

Calling the US from Spain on your mobile costs EUR 0.20-0.80 per minute, depending on your carrier and plan. That's potentially EUR 16 for a 20-minute call to your bank. Movistar, Vodafone, Orange -- they all do it. If you've checked your bill after calling a US number from Spain, you already know.

You have better options. Here's what they actually cost.

Your Options at a Glance

Four ways to call the US from Spain, ranked by cost.

Method Cost Setup Required
Spanish carrier (standard) EUR 0.20-0.80/min None
Carrier international add-on EUR 3-10/month + lower rates Plan change
VoIP subscription EUR 5-15/month App download
World Dialer $0.02/min None

The math isn't complicated. A 20-minute call to Chase on your carrier's standard rate could cost EUR 10-16. The same call through World Dialer costs $0.40 (about EUR 0.37).

Why Spanish Carriers Charge So Much

Spanish carriers treat international calls as a profit center, not a service. They know most people don't check rates before dialing. They know you'll pay whatever shows up on the bill.

Some carriers offer international add-ons. Vodafone has packages with international minutes included. Movistar offers bolt-ons too. But you have to set these up before you need them. Most people discover their carrier's international rates mid-call, then discover the add-ons existed afterwards.

The Toll-Free Trap

US toll-free numbers (1-800, 1-888, 1-877) aren't free from Spain. You can dial them -- punch in 00 1 800 and the rest -- but you'll pay full international rates. Sometimes more.

Here's what happens when you call a US toll-free number from Spain:

  • Best case: It connects, and you pay EUR 20-80/minute
  • Worse case: The company blocks international calls to that number entirely
  • Either way: Not free

Always find the company's regular +1 number instead. That's what the table below is for.

How to Dial the US from Spain

Dial +1 followed by the 10-digit US number. Most mobiles accept this format directly.

From a mobile: +1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX

From a Spanish landline: 00 1 XXX XXX XXXX

Spain's international access code is 00. But if you're on a mobile, the + sign works everywhere. Just +1 and the number.

Numbers You'll Actually Need

Here are the international numbers for US banks and government agencies. These aren't toll-free numbers -- they're direct lines that work from Spain.

Institution Number Hours (Spain Time)
Chase Bank +1 (713) 262-3300 24/7
Bank of America +1 (315) 724-4022 1 PM - 4 AM
IRS International +1 (267) 941-1000 12 PM - 5 AM
Social Security +1 (410) 965-0160 3 PM - 10 PM
US Embassy Madrid +34 91-587-2240 Business hours

Note: Bank of America accepts collect calls at the number above. Chase's line handles fraud and account issues 24/7.

Save these numbers. You'll need them eventually, and searching for "Chase international number" while on hold isn't ideal.

Best Times to Call

Spain is 6 hours ahead of the US East Coast. US business hours (9 AM - 5 PM Eastern) are 3 PM - 11 PM in Spain. West Coast hours (9 AM - 5 PM Pacific) run 6 PM - 2 AM.

Call US East Coast businesses in your early-to-mid afternoon. That catches them at the start of their day, before queues build up. Calling the IRS at 3 PM Spain time (9 AM Eastern) means shorter hold times than calling at 10 PM Spain time (4 PM Eastern).

Spain and the US switch to daylight saving time on different dates. In late March and early November, the time difference shifts by an hour for a few weeks. Check before calling if you're near those dates.
